March Madness!!

Hello, Lovely Families!!

Greetings from the 5-6 team! Students have been busy and working hard!

Here's what we've been up to:

5th graders have been researching zoos and developing opinions about their merits and shortcomings. They are polishing up their skills at articulating opinions, reasons, and evidence, and will start writing opinion essays on this topic next week!
In Science, 5th graders continue lab work for their Mixtures and Solutions unit. Their Social Studies currently focus on the Civil War and the practice of Slavery in the United States, and in Math, students are making equivalent fractions and learning to fractions!

6th graders are reading The Giver by Lois Lowry, and seeking to understand the structures, laws, and customs that exist within it. This unit parallels their work in Social Studies, where they are learning about individuals, events, and documents essential to our Nation's founding through the "We The People" text. In Science, students are demonstrating their understanding of cells, and their Math work focuses on using nets to understand and measure three dimensional shapes.

You may have heard from your student that we are trying out a new schedule which allows for longer academic blocks. So far, we are all enjoying the additional time! Students' "Specials" schedule has also been altered slightly, to allow for longer work times. Please let us know if you have questions!

COMING UP:
Conferences are Friday, March 22nd! A time sign up sheet should either have been sent home recently, or coming to you early next week!

We are also having a small Celebration of Learning (including passing out honor roll certificates for both the first and second trimester) on Thursday, March 21st, at 1pm. You should also be receiving an official invitation soon!

ALSO on Thursday, March 21st at 6pm is the First Annual RISD Elementary Art and Music Gala! This exciting event will be held in the SME gym.

We'll try our very best to keep you up to date with more excitements to come! Thanks for reading, and have a great weekend!

Ms. K., Mr. C., Mrs. Rose, and Ms. Moran
