On Friday last week, volunteer Fifth Graders (along with the support of two intrepid sixth graders) began harvesting our Victory Garden. At recess, volunteers picked butternut squash, red potatoes and green beans! We still have more squash to ripen, along with two kinds of kale; swiss chard, basil, oregano and chives to harvest.
On Thursday morning, Ms. Klinkenberg shared the classic story, "Stone Soup" with fifth graders, and Mr. Christie-Maples shared the history in the U.S.A. of "Victory Gardens" during WWI and WWII and how such gardens were important to the war effort. The whole fifth grade met together to talk about our Victory Garden and how we could celebrate our harvest. We decided to make our own "stone soup" together. On Thursday, September 22nd, we will make our "stone soup" and eat our soup together on Friday, September 23rd. This week we will continue to plan together to prepare to make this exciting project happen.
We will harvest kale this week and make kale chips to share on Wednesday. In the meantime, we will process the green beans we picked so they can go into the soup next week. The sixth grade gave us some tomatoes for our soup as well. Stay tuned for a flyer about our "Stone Soup Project" coming home later this week!
