Hello Families,
We have finally completed the video from our project exhibition night back in December (Thanks to Gabi Martino). Throughout the course of this project students read a variety of nonfiction texts, watched videos on the topic of food webs, food systems, and agricultural practices in the United States and wrote informational essays outlining their thinking around informed consumerism. Our mentor text was The Omnivore's Dilemma, A Young Readers Edition by Michael Pollan. In an effort to showcase and apply what they learned, students formed groups based on mutual cooking interests and then selected or designed their own recipes for a dish to cook in our "Chopped Jr." style cooking event. On our cooking night, each group had 1.5 hours to construct their dish. Once they were finished, volunteer judges took notes on both the quality of the food and the students' abilities to discuss and justify their recipe selection and ingredient choices.
Take a look and see for yourself! We are so incredibly proud of what they have accomplished! 6th Graders really can cook!
