Field Trips, Concerts, and much more!

May 17th 2017

Hello Families!

The last few weeks have flown by, and I'm sure the rest of the year will feel similarly. 5th and 6th grade students at SME have been enjoying a variety of educational field trips, preparing for the 5/6 concert (today!), and beginning some of our final units of the year. They also completed the SBAC tests in Language Arts and Math, which is never easy. We are proud of their perseverance!

In recent weeks, 5th graders have enjoyed both an orienteering field trip (featured in the Valley News here) with our district trails coordinator Maggie Stoudnour as well as a trip to the Lowell Mills in MA. Both adventures were a great success!

6th graders have visited the Vermont State House  and also explored the woods and trails over Bald Top mountain in Fairlee to deepen their study of Ecology. The kids continue to impress us with their love of hands on learning experiences and their ability to represent themselves and our school with poise and maturity!

End of Year Events
The end of the year promises to be a whirlwind. After the 5-6 Band and Choral concert tonight, we hope to provide a final Activity Afternoon on Wednesday, May 24th.

6th graders will also participate in two community reading events from 10:30-12 on Thursday the 25th and Wednesday June 7th. They are exploring the book Brown Girl Dreaming as part of the Vermont Reads program and their study of the Civil Rights Movement.
Friday, May 26th is "step up day," in which 6th graders visit Rivendell Academy and learn about 7th grade.
The 6th grade trip is June 8th-9th, and graduation is June 16th!

Please be in touch if you have a questions, and enjoy the warm weather!
