Fifth Grade Africa Unit
Beginning February 8th, in the mornings for two weeks, our fifth graders will be participating in an integrated study of Africa. On Friday, February 12th, we will go on a field trip to the Hood Museum in Hanover, NH, to tour an exhibit of modern African Art, as well as viewing an exhibit of traditional African weapons.

In this unit of study, we will introduce the diverse people, nations, cultures, and geography that make up the second largest continent of our world. In Music, students will practice drumming. In Physical Education, students will play recreational games similar to the ones children play in the many nations of Africa. In Art, students will make African Masks. In Language Arts and Social Studies, students will explore a variety of African folktales, connecting their historical stories with how they inform the reader of African cultural values. We will study rural and urban cultures, their cuisine, the geographical landscapes of the nations of Africa, along with an introduction to some of the 50 nations on the African continent.

We are planning a culminating event on Friday, February 19th, when we plan to share our favorite African folktales, poems, and games together. We are hoping that students (and their parents) will join us for a potluck lunch, where we will share African recipes we created at home. Do join us.
